A technic has been described for the production of malignant epithelial tumors in the cheek pouch of the Syrian hamster using three of the polycyclic hydrocarbons. Tumors ranging from benign papilloma to squamous cell carcinoma with lymph node metastasis were produced. An acetone solution of 9,10-dimethyl-1,2-benzanthracene proves to be the best combination. 3,4-Benzpyrene and 20-methylcholanthrene in acetone also gave positive results, but to a lesser degree. The effects of solvents, duration of painting, and the possible use of the hamster in more detailed studies of experimental oral cancer are briefly discussed.
