Application of the Hotchkiss-MacManus periodic acid-leucofuchsin stain to powdered enamel samples permits ready detection of contaminating dentin fragments. The dentin is stained a deep red by this method, and much of the enamel is dissolved in acid. This results not only in coloration, but also in considerable concentration of the dentin.
