1. For Lactobacillus acidophilus 4646 it has been found that manganese is essential for growth.
2. Chelating agents such as sodium citrate or sodium ethylenediamine tetra acetate, which are capable of forming nonionized complexes with manganese ion, effectively inhibited growth of the bacteria. The inhibitory effect could be reversed by higher levels of the metallic ion.
3. Potassium fluoride inhibited growth of L. acidophilus 4646 but only at relatively high concentrations. The effect was not reversed by added manganese.
