THE EFFECT OF TOBACCO SMOKE UPON SOME BACTERIA

H. J. TURKHEIM D.M.D.1

1 London, England

Experiments have confirmed both the bacteriostatic and the bactericidal effect of tobacco smoke on certain organisms in vitro, these effects being more marked in a liquid medium than on solid agar. Bacterial colonies grow as freely on agar mixed with saliva treated with tobacco smoke as on plates containing only normal saliva. Two of the colonies grown on "tobacco-smoke-saliva" showed distinctive pigmentation.
