1. The activity of the ammonia-producing mechanism appears to be unrelated to caries activity as measured by lactobacillus counts.
2. There is no direct relationship between the urease content of saliva and the lactobacillus count.
3. The relation between urease activity and ammonia production is not a significant one.
4. In all cases the presence of 2.5 per cent glucose was found to stimulate the activity of the urease present in saliva.
