A roentgenologic method for scientific caries surveys in large groups of patients is described, with which a reliable evaluation of proximal enamel caries of molars and premolars is possible. The roentgenograms give reproducible results with regard to projection and overlapping in 96 out of 100 cases.
In 266 children (1,064 roentgenograms) the number of carious proximal surfaces for each type of surface separately could be determined with a standard
error
m = 1 to 2 per cent. For all surfaces taken together
m was only 0.3 per cent.
