THE INFLUENCE OF TOPICALLY APPLIED FLUORINE ON THE PERMEABILITY OF ENAMEL

HELGE BERGGREN ODONT.D.1 and HARRY HEDSTRÖM VET.M.D.1

1 Department of Operative Dentistry, State Dental College and State Veterinary Medical Institute, Stockholm, Sweden

Investigations have been performed to test the effect of topical fluorine application upon the permeability of enamel of dogs 7 to 12 months old. After application of a 2 or 4 per cent sodium fluoride solution to the canines, these teeth were exposed for 38 to 44 hours to a toxin-fructose mixture, where the toxin titer was 1:100,000 and the fructose concentration 20 per cent. The permeability of the dental enamel was unchanged by treating the teeth with fluorine.
