THE VALIDITY OF HAMSTER STUDIES IN CARIES CONTROL

HELMUT A. ZANDER M.S., D.D.S.1, VINCENT F. LISANTI D.M.D.1, and FREDERIC R. SHIERE M.S., D.D.S.1

Three antibiotics have been tested for their efficacy in reducing hamster caries. When applied in dentifrice form by brushing, penicillin concentrations of 500 units per Gm. were most effective, aureomycin had less efficacy, and tyrothricin was ineffective. The hamster findings with penicillin had a value in predicting effectiveness of a recent clinical study on human beings.

This is evidence to justify the use of hamsters in caries research.
