1. Since filtered saliva showed no phosphatatic activity and since phosphatase passes unchanged through the filter, it may be assumed that saliva as secreted by the glands contains no phosphatase. The phrase "salivary phosphatase" should be changed therefore to the more exact "phosphatase in saliva."
2. Relative to the average population of Lactobacillus acidophilus in saliva of caries-susceptible (100,000 per ml.), only very small amounts of phosphatase are derived from these bacteria.
3. The small amount of phosphatase in saliva is probably derived from cellular debris and food residues, with a lesser contribution by microorganisms.
