PAPER PARTITION CHROMATOGRAPHY: FREE AMINO ACIDS IN SALIVA

A PRELIMINARY REPORT

HYMAN J. V. GOLDBERG 1, J. EDWARD GILDA 1, and GARSON H. TISHKOFF 1

1 Division of Dental Research and Department of Pathology, University of Rochester School of Medicine and Dentistry, Rochester, N. Y.

Paper partition chromatography technic applied to ultrafiltrates of pooled saliva showed the presence of thirteen free amino acids in saliva. The acids found were: glutamic acid, aspartic acid, glycine, alanine, methionine (sulfoxide), arginine, leucine, lysine, phenylalanine, taurine, tyrosine, valine, and proline. The method is also capable of demonstrating peptides, one of which was probably serylglycylglycine.

The technic has distinct advantages over methods previously used, in that all the amino acids present in saliva can be identified without interference of peptides or other nitrogenous products.
