SOME OBSERVATIONS ON THE CLEARANCE OF GLUCOSE FROM THE ORAL CAVITY

J. F. VOLKER 1 and D. M. PINKERTON 1

1 (Department of Preventive Dentistry, Tufts College Dental School, Boston, Mass.)

The concentration of reducing substance calculated as glucose has been determined before and at varying intervals after the ingestion of various foods and confections including chewing gum, hard mints, soft mints, bread and jam, cookies and chewy candy. The maximum concentration was reached within 5 minutes and the return to the normal was completed in 30 minutes. The salivary glucose levels showed considerable variation from person to person, but in general they were the greatest after chewy candy and the least after chewing gum. A limited number of observations have also been made on the clearance of glucose contained in army field rations and lollypops.
