A significant variability was found in the pain threshold determinations in different persons and also in the same person over a period of time. The average pain threshold of 16 young adults was 67.7 millivolts with a standard deviation of ±23.5 millivolts. About two-thirds of the persons showed a gradual rise in threshold over a period of months.
