A 2-year investigation of the incidence of caries in 361 teeth of 21 children between 2 and 13 years of age revealed a marked increase in rate following suspension of periodic topical applications of a sodium fluoride solution received over a period of 1 year. The results suggest that the caries-inhibiting effect of a series of topical fluorine administrations is restricted in the absence of continued applications.
