1. Caries spreads in the enamel along the less calcified lines and develops faster in less calcified areas.
2. The harder superficial layer of the enamel resists caries more than the softer deeper layers.
3. The alternating, more and less calcified incremental layers of Retzius differ also in their resistance to caries. The darker, less calcified layers are more readily invaded.
