A STUDY OF THE BILATERAL INCIDENCE OF CARIOUS LESIONS

DAVID B. SCOTT D.D.S.1

1 Division of Dental Research, University of Rochester School of Medicine and Dentistry, Rochester, N. Y., and the Baltimore College of Dental Surgery, Dental School, University of Maryland, Baltimore, Md.

A study of the posterior teeth of 300 individuals as visualized in bite-wing radiographs revealed that almost three-fourths of the teeth involved with lesions were affected symmetrically in bilaterally identical pairs. The tendency toward a bilateral incidence of caries was supported by consideration of etiologic and predisposing factors generally conceded to be active in caries production. Knowledge of the tendency is important in the diagnosis and prognosis of carious destruction of the teeth.
