The presence of a phagocytosis-stimulating factor in saliva was established by tests with the saliva of 41 patients selected at random. Proof of the identity of this factor as opsonin was secured by absorption and heating experiments. It was possible also to reactivate the heated saliva. In addition, it was found that there may be a factor in saliva which reduces the ability of serum to stimulate phagocytosis. The nature of this factor has not been determined.
