Smears taken from the surface of the mucous membrane of the mouth were used to study the cytologic detail of the superficial epithelial cells. The staining method of Ernst-Gram revealed a series of six stages in the process of keratinization. The degree of keratinization was lowest in the smears from the cheek; it increased progressively in the smears from the tongue, gingivae and palate. The number of leucocytes in the smears decreased gradually with an increase in the degree of keratinization of the epithelial cells.
