STUDIES ON THE ACID SOLUBILITY OF HUMAN ENAMEL

J. F. VOLKER D.D.S., A.B., M.S.1

1 Department of Biochemistry and Pharmacology, School of Medicine and Dentistry, The University of Rochester, Rochester, N. Y.

A study of the acid solubility of different types of human enamel, using a gravimetric technique, revealed the following:

1. Deciduous enamel was more soluble than permanent enamel. No striking difference in the solubility of young and old permanent enamel was evident, although the experimental data suggested a decrease in enamel solubility with age.

2. Enamel from carious and non-carious teeth was not appreciably different in its resistance to solution by acids.

3. The values obtained for the enamel of unerupted teeth compared favorably with those already recorded for the enamel of erupted teeth.
