SOLUBILITY OF TOOTH ENAMEL IN SALIVA AT VARIOUS pH LEVELS

L. S. FOSDICK PH.D.1 and A. C. STARKE JR. B.S.1

1 Chemistry Department, Northwestern University Dental School, Chicago, Ill.

The calcium and phosphorus contents of saliva-tooth enamellactic acid mixtures at various pH levels were determined. The apparent solubility product was calculated at various pH levels and was found to vary over wide limits. The factors causing this variation were discussed. A method was suggested for the determination of the critical pH at which enamel will dissolve in saliva. This was correlated with the pH in isolated areas of the mouth and in carious lesions of the teeth.
