SOME OBSERVATIONS ON THE pH OF SALIVA

LOUIS I. GROSSMAN D.D.S.,1 and BERNARD M. BRICKMAN D.D.S.1

1 Philadelphia, Pa.

(1) The pH range of saliva is from pH 5.0 to pH 8.0. (2) The pH range of saliva among those in ill health is greater than among those in good health. (3) Although the pH level of saliva varies with different people, it is fairly constant for the same individual. (4) The average diurnal pH of saliva lies between pH 6.5 and pH 6.9. (5) The nocturnal pH of saliva is lower than the diurnal pH. (6) There is a drop in pH of saliva after eating. This drop in pH is sometimes preceded by a rise in pH.
