Shortly after the issuance of each number of this Journal, we send to each author concerned a copy of his paper or discussion (and of the abstract of it in the section of "contents"), in its final form (taken from a copy of the Journal ready for circulation), with the request that a careful examination be made for the detection and formal correction of any errors that might have appeared. Special effort is made, by the editorial and publication offices, to prevent the occurrence of typographical and other errors, but we cannot hope to prevent the inevitable appearance of such mistakes now and then. We are anxious, however, to correct errors, publicly and formally, when they occur, in order that this Journal may attain to the highest possible realization of the ideal of perfect accuracy in every statement published on its pages.
We summarize, below, the only corrections that have been reported to us by the authors of the contents of Nos. 1, 2 and 3 of this volume.
PAPER BY BISSELL B. PALMER, JR., PAGES 315-351
In the sixteenth line from the bottom of page 349, the phrase, the canals of, should be inserted between the words "filling" and "hundreds."
PAPER BY BYRON C. DARLING, PAGES 391-412
Acknowledgment: The illustrations on pages 394 (fig. 3), 403 (fig. 5), and 404 (figs. 6 and 7), were made from specimens in the collection of Dr. W. H. Haskins. The illustrations were previously used by Dr. Darling, in the Medical Record, of the issue of March 13, 1915.
Addition to "literature cited," page 412: (2a) Darling, B. C. 1915. Medical Record, lxxxvii, p. 426.
DISCUSSION BY HAROLD S. VAUGHAN, PAGES xxiv-xxvi
The phrase, "the surface bends," at the end of the twelfth line from the top of page xxv should read: the surface bleeds.
PAPER BY AUGUSTUS S. DOWNING, PAGES xxxiii-xlv
Change "waging" on the sixth line of the paper, page xxxiii, to urging.
DISCUSSION BY PHILIP SCHEIMAN, PAGE lxix
In Dr. Scheiman's name, Philip should appear in place of "P. H."
DISCUSSION BY H. W. GILLETT, PAGES lxxxiii-lxxxiv
On page lxxxiv, in the ninth line from the top, substitute recently for "freshly;" in the fourteenth line from the top, substitute operations for "treatments."
DISCUSSION BY "COL. SCOTT," PAGE lxxxiv
The "Col. Scott" referred to is Colonel Minot E. Scott, Canal Zone, Panama.
DISCUSSION BY ANDREW J. ASCH, PAGE lxxxv
Dr. Asch has revised his discussion (originally presented in eight lines) to the following statement: Dr. Palmer has handled the situation admirably, and in the only way in which he could have handled it under existing conditions. I think, however, a very important point has been overlooked, namely, that we are going to continue to have an army. It will not be as large as it was but it strikes me that, if it takes ten, twenty or fifty dentists to one thousand men, we should have them. The real lesson we have learned from Dr. Palmer and other army dentists is that, if fifty dentists are required for one thousand men, their appointment should be authorized.
Corrections and changes will be noted here, in each volume. Authors are urged to examine the final forms of their papers in all particulars; to notify us of the occurrence of uncorrected typographical errors or of other mistakes; and to suggest the announcement of changes, if any can be stated, that would render their papers more precise in any respects.
